Neusiedler See-Seewinkel

Declared in 1993 on the Austrian side (with its Hungarian counterpart, Fertő-Hanság), Lake Neusiedl is one of the largest steppe lakes in Europe, remarkable for having no natural surface outflow whatever: its level depends solely on the balance between rain and evaporation, which has caused extreme swings in its extent through history — it dried out completely on occasions documented in the 19th century. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, as a cultural landscape.
