Declared in 2002 as part of the simultaneous creation of 13 Gabonese national parks driven by the then president Omar Bongo, Loango is celebrated as one of the few places on the planet where forest elephants, hippos and buffalo walk straight out onto untouched sandy beaches and wade into the Atlantic surf — behaviour first brought to a wide public by the National Geographic documentary Surfing Elephants, which made Gabon internationally known as a conservation destination.
