Declared in 1935 in the depths of the Great Depression, Shenandoah is one of the few large national parks in the eastern United States formed almost entirely on private farmland expropriated and bought back by the state of Virginia, displacing hundreds of mountain families who had lived there for generations. Its scenic Skyline Drive, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression itself, runs 170 km along the whole crest of the Blue Ridge.
