Similajau

Similajau National Park was established in 1976 in northern Sarawak, in insular Malaysia, and protects some 90 km² along about thirty kilometres of coast north-east of Bintulu.

It is a narrow strip where lowland dipterocarp rainforest reaches practically to the shore, interrupted by sandy beaches, rocky headlands and river mouths with mangrove. That direct contact between rainforest and sea is uncommon on the coast of Borneo, which has been heavily transformed by oil palm plantation and industry.

Its beaches are a green turtle nesting area, and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and finless porpoises are seen in its waters. The forest is home to macaques, gibbons, hornbills and an abundant birdlife, and the park preserves stands of kerangas, a forest type on white sand with extremely poor soils, with stunted vegetation and carnivorous plants of the genus Nepenthes. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the river mouths, which limits swimming along certain stretches.
