Protected since 1958 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, Xishuangbanna, at the southern tip of China's Yunnan province on the border with Laos and Myanmar, holds the northernmost documented population of wild Asian elephant on the planet. In 2020-2021 a group from this population made an unusual migration of more than 500 km north into China, followed live by Chinese and international media and social networks, and prompting worldwide fascination with what lay behind so atypical a journey.
