Spotted something wrong?

The largest open peat bog in western Europe outside the Arctic, crossed by boardwalks

Area

77 km²

Designated in

1982

Region

Småland

Declared in 1982, Store Mosse protects the largest open peat bog in western Europe outside the Arctic, a peat-accumulating ecosystem formed over thousands of years that acts as an important natural carbon sink. Its raised boardwalks let visitors cross the wetland without damaging the delicate sphagnum, and the birdwatching tower beside the main entrance has an accessible lift, which is unusual in nature trail infrastructure.
