Endau-Rompin

Endau-Rompin National Park was established in 1993 on the border between the states of Johor and Pahang, in the south of peninsular Malaysia, and protects some 870 km². It is the country's second largest national park by area.

Its substrate is of sandstone and volcanic rock some 250 million years old, and erosion has shaped plateaux, escarpments and waterfalls such as Buaya Sangkut and Upeh Guling on them. On that substrate grows a lowland and hill dipterocarp rainforest that is among the oldest on the planet: the region did not undergo the glaciations and its forest cover has had a continuity of millions of years, which explains its diversity.

The park is home to the emblematic wildlife of the Malay peninsula: Malayan tiger, in a critical situation with barely a hundred-odd animals in the whole country, Asian elephant, Malayan tapir, gaur and white-handed gibbon. It was also one of the last strongholds of the Sumatran rhinoceros in peninsular Malaysia, today extinct in the country. Orang Asli communities of the Jakun group live inside it, holding traditional rights of use over the forest.
