An isolated, spindle-shaped reef some 600 m long, with plateaux to the north and south and walls that fall sheer. The coral community is dominated by soft corals of the genus Dendronephthya. It is one of the most reliable places in the Red Sea for the oceanic whitetip shark, which patrols the shallow part of the reef.

Did you know

El arrecife fue cartografiado hacia 1830 por Robert Moresby durante el levantamiento británico del mar Rojo, y lleva el nombre de John Elphinstone, 12.º Lord Elphinstone. Su nombre árabe es Sha'ab Abu Hamra. Hay un memorial dedicado a buceadores fallecidos en el sitio, recordatorio de que la corriente aquí no se negocia.
