Declared in 1998, Cat Tien was the last documented refuge of the Javan rhinoceros in mainland South-East Asia, until the Vietnamese subspecies was officially declared extinct in 2010, after the body of what is believed to have been its last animal was found, poached for its horn. Since then the park has run a programme to reintroduce the Siamese crocodile, also extinct in the wild in Vietnam for decades.
