Murchison Falls

Declared in 1952, it is the largest national park in Uganda, and its most spectacular feature is the point where the mighty Victoria Nile is forced through a gorge barely 7 metres wide before plunging 43 metres in a waterfall of extraordinary power, which Winston Churchill described after visiting in 1907 as one of the most impressive sights of his whole African journey. The park suffered a severe loss of wildlife under Idi Amin's regime and the Ugandan civil war of the 1970s and 1980s, from which it has recovered markedly over recent decades.
