Highlight

The largest remnant of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest surviving in the United States

Protected initially as a national monument in 1976 and raised to a national park in 2003, Congaree preserves the largest remnant of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest surviving in the United States, with some of the tallest individual trees in the eastern half of the country thanks to the extraordinary fertility of the periodic floods of the Congaree river, which lay down nutrients rather than washing them away.
