Gwaii Haanas

Created in 1988 through the historic South Moresby Agreement, Gwaii Haanas is a Canadian first for its joint management between the federal government and the Haida Nation, which holds an effective veto over the park's decisions through the Archipelago Management Board, an unusual case of genuine indigenous co-governance over a federal protected area. The archipelago holds abandoned villages with totem poles and implements carved by the Haida before European contact, watched over today by the Haida Gwaii Watchmen, who receive visitors.
