Brazil's first national park, declared in 1937
Declared in 1937, Itatiaia was Brazil's first national park, protecting the massif of the same name in the Serra da Mantiqueira, between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. It is one of the last refuges of the muriqui monkey, the largest primate on the entire American continent, listed as critically endangered and endemic to the surviving fragments of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.
