Highlight

Germany's greatest osprey and common crane sanctuary, declared on the very day reunification took effect

Declared on 1 October 1990, coinciding almost exactly with German reunification, Müritz protects the largest region of lowland lakes and forest in Germany and supports the country's largest breeding population of osprey, as well as serving as a critical migratory stop for tens of thousands of common cranes each autumn, a gathering that draws birdwatchers from across Central Europe.
