Declared in 1966, the valley of the Omo, near which the park lies, is one of the most important palaeoanthropological sites in the world: it was here in 1967 that the fossils known as Omo I were found, dated at over 195,000 years and among the oldest anatomically modern Homo sapiens remains ever documented, with direct bearing on the scientific understanding of where our own species arose in East Africa.
