Pirin National Park

Declared in 1962 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, Pirin is a granite massif with over a hundred lakes of glacial origin and some of the longest-lived Balkan black pines in Europe, with documented ages beyond 1,300 years — among the oldest individual living things on the continent. Building and expanding ski resorts within the park's boundaries has caused strong tension and environmental protest campaigns over the past two decades.
