Purace

Declared in 1961, Puracé protects the source of the river Magdalena, the most important waterway in Colombia, which runs almost the length of the country from south to north before reaching the Caribbean. The Puracé volcano, still active, is home to one of the few successful Andean condor reintroduction programmes in Colombia, a bird that had all but disappeared from the country by the middle of the 20th century.
