Highlight

An archipelago of 32 coral islands off northern Mozambique, with traces of the old Swahili trading route across the Indian Ocean

Declared in 2002, Quirimbas protects an archipelago of 32 coral islands off the northern coast of Mozambique, which for centuries formed part of the Swahili trading network of the Indian Ocean, linking East Africa with Arabia, Persia and India long before the Portuguese arrived in the 16th century. Ibo Island, within the park, still has its Portuguese fortifications and a Swahili-Omani architecture that speaks of that cosmopolitan trading past.
