Declared in 1972, Serra da Canastra protects the source of the river São Francisco, one of the longest and economically most important rivers in Brazil, which rises from a spring within the park's own boundaries before running more than 2,800 km towards the north-east of the country. The park also holds one of the healthiest maned wolf populations in the Cerrado biome.
