Highlight

It protects an almost perfectly conical volcano in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon

Declared in 1994 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2000, Sumaco Napo-Galeras protects the Sumaco volcano, an almost perfectly symmetrical cone that rises in isolation in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon with no surrounding range — an unusual piece of geology that generates its own microclimate and a biodiversity transitional between the Andes and the lowland Amazon.
