Declared in 1987, Utría protects a tropical fjord, an extremely unusual landform at these latitudes, on the coast of Colombia's biogeographic Chocó, one of the rainiest regions on the planet. Each year, between July and October, humpback whales from the South Pacific arrive in its calm waters to give birth and raise their calves before setting out on the return to their Antarctic feeding grounds.
