Wilpattu

Declared in 1938, it is the largest and oldest national park in Sri Lanka, celebrated for its villus, natural freshwater lakes surrounded by savanna which give the park its name. It stayed almost entirely closed between 1988 and 2003 because of the Sri Lankan civil war, and only reopened fully to the public in 2010, after the conflict finally ended, gradually recovering its wildlife populations since.
