The highest-risk category on the Red List short of extinction in the wild.
Critically Endangered (CR) is the most serious of the IUCN's three threatened categories: the species faces an extremely high risk of becoming extinct in the wild. These are usually tiny populations, in rapid decline or confined to a very small area, and for many of them survival depends directly on conservation programmes. The IUCN adds the tag “possibly extinct” when there are signs that one of them has already disappeared but this has not yet been confirmed.
