IUCN Red List category for species at very high risk of extinction in the wild.
Endangered (EN) is the middle one of the IUCN's three threatened categories, between Vulnerable and Critically Endangered. A species enters it when it meets any of the quantitative criteria the organisation sets, such as a very sharp population decline over a given period, a very small and fragmented range, or a very low number of adults. Species as well known as the tiger and the chimpanzee are in this category.
