Species that live naturally in one particular region and nowhere else.
A species is endemic when its natural range is limited to a particular geographical area, whether a country, an island, a mountain range or even a single lake. Islands and isolated mountains accumulate many endemics, because isolation lets their populations evolve separately for a long time. That exclusivity also makes them fragile: if their only habitat is degraded, they have nowhere else in the world to survive.
