IUCN Red List category for species close to meeting the criteria for being threatened.
Near Threatened (NT) is the category the IUCN assigns when a species does not yet reach the thresholds for Vulnerable, but is close to doing so or would do so without the conservation measures that currently support it. It works as a warning sign: a population shrinking little by little, or a range that is contracting. Assessments are reviewed periodically, and a species can move up or down a category depending on what new data show.
