Snails, clams, mussels, octopuses and squid: soft-bodied animals.
Molluscs form one of the most diverse groups of animals, with species in the sea, in fresh water and on dry land. Most have a soft body protected by a calcareous shell secreted by a tissue called the mantle, although in groups such as slugs and octopuses it has been reduced or lost. They range from tiny snails to the giant squid, and cephalopods, such as the octopus, have the most complex nervous system of any invertebrate.
