Near Cape Range
Australia's longest fringing reef, some 260 km, and one of the few great reefs in the world that literally hugs the land. The continental shelf is unusually narrow here, so that deep ocean water, the reef and the coast lie very close together: that concentrates an amount of marine life out of all proportion to the size of the place.

It is the largest documented whale shark aggregation in the world, and around 85% of the animals that arrive are juvenile males. The World Heritage property is not only marine: it includes the Cape Range karst system, with hundreds of caves, sinkholes and bodies of groundwater that are home to highly specialised subterranean fauna.
