Declared in 1996 within the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Great Blue Hole is a circular submarine sinkhole 124 metres deep and over 300 metres across, formed through successive ice ages when the sea was far lower and a system of limestone caves collapsed in on itself. The French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau named it in the 1970s one of the ten finest dive sites in the world, which made its international reputation among divers.
