Created in 1992, it is the largest marine protected area in Europe (2,260 km²) and the first national marine park in Greece, established specifically to protect the Mediterranean monk seal, one of the most threatened marine mammal species on the planet, of which some of the last animals in the Aegean survive in its waters.
