Highlight

Peru's largest national park; the land of several indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation, with no contact with the rest of society

Declared in 2004, Alto Purús is the largest national park in Peru and protects one of the last great stretches of western Amazon rainforest with virtually no direct human intervention, home to several indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation, the Mashco-Piro among them, whose legal protection has repeatedly clashed with logging and hydrocarbon exploration in adjoining areas.
