Highlight
The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world, with a range of up to 16 metres
Declared in 1948, it protects a stretch of coast on the Bay of Fundy, where the highest tides in the world are recorded — up to 16 metres between high and low water — a phenomenon caused by the bay's particular funnel shape, which amplifies the Atlantic's natural oscillations. The effect is so pronounced that the fishing boats of the nearby village of Alma sit quite literally aground on the sea bed at low tide, only to float again a few hours later.
