Highlight

The largest national park in the Dominican Republic; it holds the largest flamingo colony in the insular Caribbean

Declared in 1983, it is the largest national park in the Dominican Republic and protects the south-western tip of the island of Hispaniola, including Isla Beata and its practically uninhabited white sand beaches. It holds the largest flamingo colony in the insular Caribbean and one of the last significant populations of the rhinoceros iguana, a species endemic to Hispaniola and listed as endangered, which owes its name to the horny bump the males carry on the snout, much like a small horn.
