Highlight
Named during Queen Elizabeth II's visit in 1954; famous for its tree-climbing lions
Declared in 1952 as Kazinga National Park and renamed in 1954 after a visit by the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II, the park is celebrated for a lion population with the unusual habit of climbing trees through the hottest hours of the day, a behaviour documented in very few lion populations anywhere and whose exact cause — possibly to escape flies or the heat of the ground — still has no settled scientific explanation.
