Established in 1948, Samburu lies in the semi-arid north of Kenya and is celebrated for the so-called Samburu Special Five: the reticulated giraffe, Grévy's zebra, the beisa oryx, the gerenuk and the Somali ostrich, five species adapted to dry country that are absent from the more famous parks of southern Kenya such as the Maasai Mara. The reserve is run in close cooperation with the Samburu people, semi-nomadic herders culturally close kin to the Maasai.
