Tanjung Puting

Declared in 1982, Tanjung Puting is home to Camp Leakey, founded in 1971 by the Lithuanian-Canadian primatologist Biruté Galdikas, the least known of the three Leakey's Angels — alongside Jane Goodall (chimpanzees) and Dian Fossey (gorillas) — all of them sent out by the palaeoanthropologist Louis Leakey to study the great apes in their own habitat. Galdikas remains involved in orangutan research and rehabilitation in the park more than five decades after founding it, in the longest continuous primate study devoted to this species anywhere in the world.
