Declared in 1936, Cape Breton Highlands is crossed by the Cabot Trail, a 298 km scenic road named after the Italian explorer Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot), who in 1497 may have been the first European since the Vikings to sight the coast of North America in this very region. The route, routinely reckoned among the most spectacular coastal drives in the world, combines Atlantic cliffs with maple woods that in autumn give some of the most intense foliage colour in Canada.
