Declared in 1961 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 as part of the Cerrado Protected Areas, Emas protects one of the finest examples of the tropical savannah of the Brazilian Cerrado, one of the most biodiverse and at the same time most threatened biomes on the planet as soya farming spreads. Through the rainy season, its termite mounds hold the bioluminescent larvae of an endemic beetle that glow blue-green at dusk, an extremely rare natural phenomenon documented in very few places in the world.
