Declared a national park in 1973 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, Gros Morne is celebrated among geologists the world over for its Tablelands: a plateau of orange-brown peridotite from the Earth's mantle, thrust to the surface by a collision of tectonic plates 485 million years ago, and one of the few places on the planet where you can quite literally walk on mantle rock. Its freshwater fiords, such as Western Brook Pond, were carved by glaciers and cut off from the sea when the land rose after the ice melted.
