Sable Island

Declared a National Park Reserve in 2013, Sable Island is a remote sandbank out in the Atlantic nicknamed the graveyard of the Atlantic for the more than 350 wrecks documented on its sandbars over the centuries, caused by dense fog and treacherous currents on the main transatlantic shipping route. Its wild horses, present since at least the 18th century and of uncertain origin, share the island with the largest grey seal breeding colony in the world, with tens of thousands of pups born on its beaches each winter.
