Kakum

Protected as a forest reserve since 1931 and raised to a national park in 1992, Kakum preserves one of the last fragments of primary rainforest on the Ghanaian coast, an ecosystem that once covered much of the country and today survives only in scattered pockets under pressure from farming. It is celebrated for its canopy walkway, built in 1995 with the help of Canadian engineers and one of the first of its kind open to the public in Africa: seven suspension bridges linking platforms 40 metres up among the emergent trees, which let visitors see the forest from an unusual aerial perspective without felling or damaging anything.
