Declared in 1974, Morrocoy combines a mangrove shoreline with an archipelago of small white sand cays off the coast of Falcón state, one of the most popular beach destinations for Venezuelan domestic tourism because it is relatively close to Caracas. Its shallow waters, sheltered from the open swell, favour extensive seagrass meadows and fringing coral reefs.
