Highlight

One of the oldest lakes in Europe, shared between three countries, and home to the largest Dalmatian pelican colony in the world

Declared in Greece in 1974 and later extended with matching reserves in Albania and North Macedonia, Lake Prespa is one of the oldest lakes in Europe, with more than a million years of unbroken history, and supports the largest breeding colony of Dalmatian pelican on the planet. The three-country cooperation over its joint management, formalised in the Prespa Declaration of 2000, is routinely cited as a model of cross-border environmental diplomacy in a region historically marked by political tension.
