Declared in 1968 after decades of campaigning by the Save the Redwoods League (founded in 1918), by which time logging had already taken more than 90% of California's original coast redwood forest. Run jointly by the federal government and three California state parks, it protects the tallest trees documented on the planet, with specimens over 110 metres high and several thousand years old — among them the celebrated Hyperion, found in 2006 and whose exact location is kept secret to protect it from mass tourism.
