Declared in 2013, Sierra de Guadarrama is one of the easiest national parks in the world to reach from a major European capital, under an hour by car from the centre of Madrid, which makes it the region's busiest weekend mountain destination and has made it the historic gateway to the sierra for generations of Madrileños since the late 19th century, when the Institución Libre de Enseñanza began its pioneering educational mountain excursions.
