In pairs
Species that form stable pairs, often across several breeding seasons.
What it means
Pairing appears where raising young needs both adults: one incubates or stands guard while the other goes for food. It is especially frequent in birds, and in many of them the bond lasts more than one season and involves greeting rituals and song that keep it going. Stable does not mean exclusive: genetic studies have shown that in a good number of socially monogamous species there is offspring fathered outside the pair.
