El Salvador has five critically endangered species and none is a mammal: staghorn coral, the great green macaw, the great hammerhead, the oceanic whitetip and the hawksbill turtle. Mammals appear a step lower — Baird's tapir and Geoffroy's spider monkey, both endangered — and the list also gathers four sea turtles, five sharks and the American crocodile.
