Threatened species by country
Twelve of Latvia's twenty-two threatened species are fish, and four of them are food fish: Atlantic cod, haddock, horse mackerel and bluefish. That is what separates this list from those of its landlocked neighbours, where the sea never appears. Critically endangered are the European eel, the European sturgeon and the tope; the only land mammals are the giant noctule and the southern water vole.
