Threatened species by country
Eleven of Uruguay's twenty-six threatened species are endangered, more than in any other category, and nine on the list are sharks and rays. The sea dominates: blue whale, sei whale, southern elephant seal and the franciscana, the dolphin of the Río de la Plata. On land there remain the huemul, the southern river otter and the marsh deer. The two critical cases are the tope and the hooded grebe.
