Heard and McDonald Islands

Subantarctic (southern Indian Ocean)Designated in 19973,688 km²
Spotted something wrong?

The only active volcano in all of Australian territory; one of the areas on the planet least disturbed by human activity

Area

3,688 km²

Designated in

1997

Region

Subantarctic (southern Indian Ocean)

Made an Australian national park in 1997 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site the same year, Heard and McDonald Islands hold the only active volcanoes in all of Australian territory, among them Big Ben, whose summit stays capped by glaciers. Having historically never had introduced species — unlike almost every other subantarctic island, colonised in their day by rats or cats brought by whalers — the islands are regarded as one of the island ecosystems least disturbed by direct human activity anywhere on the planet, with no eradication programme needed because there is nothing to eradicate.
